Rrankly, do we really need a Guard?
The answer is "Yes we do!". Nobody but the Guard's masters can ask for and be given the keys.
Now that the masters have asked for the keys what can the Guard do except to hand them over dutifully.
Please don't blame the Guard. He is only carrying out his duties. That's why he is being paid so handsomely.
