The cartoonist's role is not so much to instruct his audience, or illuminate the Truth, as it is to simply take an honest stand and present it vehemently enough so that it must be confronted. This constitutes the power of the cartoon to stimulate discussion and debate. And this is the cartoon's positive function in society-Bill Watterson

The cleanup

our apathy has allowed the environment to be infested by rats and these pests are the mirror image of the political vermins in our midst.

how appropriate to have a cleanup,
eliminating both types of vermins !

The cats have grown too fat to do their job.

With the cats so comfortably fed, what do we expect them to do?

Catching rats is from their mind when they have so much in their tummies.
